Expense receipts shouldn't require a search party

Adam spent 20 minutes looking for a $36 receipt. His finance team sent three Slack messages. Someone made a sticky note.

Ramp would have matched it automatically the moment he swiped. Auto-coded, in-policy, synced. Nobody had to ask Adam for anything.

This is what finance looks like when it runs itself.

Your team can be Adam. Or they can not be Adam.

Quick update: I edited my LinkedIn page to show that GenZtea is an experimental marketing agency:

Now onto this week and honestly this edition hit different to put together.

I spent a lot of time this week thinking about something a USA TODAY reporter said after going phone-free for a month. she had spent two years, three months, and seven days of her life on her phone. that is a fifth of her twenties. and instead of another app to fix it, what actually rewired her were rooms. a phone-free night in Fort Greene where someone bangs a drum and everyone drops their phone in a metal colander. a dance party in East Williamsburg where nobody was filming. a study session in Prospect Park where she looked up and realized she did not feel like she was missing anything.

that is the thread running through everything in this edition. the scarcest product for our generation right now is not a better app or a smarter AI. it is presence.

Here's What We're Covering:

  • Gen Z is breaking up with their phones and it is becoming a whole economy. traffic to Dumbphone Finder grew 12x from 2022 to 2025. flip-phone startup dumb.co has a waitlist and their average user is 24 years old. Walkman sales are up 111%. Eventbrite declared this "The Offline Summer." this is not a niche trend. it is a market signal with serious business implications for founders, creators, and investors paying attention.

Now... let's get into it! ⬇️

Gen Z is Breaking Up With Their Phones (and It's Becoming a Whole Economy)

A USA TODAY reporter just spent a month living with a "dumb phone", and her experiment says a lot about where our generation is headed.

Rachel Hale is 24 and covers youth mental health. A screen time calculator told her she'd already spent two years, three months, and seven days of her life on her phone. Read that again. That's not doom-scrolling guilt, that's a fifth of her twenties.

So on June 1, she buried her iPhone 17 in a desk drawer and switched to a Light Phone II, a device barely bigger than a hotel key card that does calls, texts, an alarm, and basically nothing else. No Instagram. No group chat (her texts turned everyone's bubbles green, and yes, her friends roasted her for it). No camera. She got lost on the subway, missed a hot restaurant reservation because the text went to her retired iPhone, and couldn't record the Knicks winning the finals.

But here's the part that matters for us: she's not an outlier. She's early-majority.

The receipts on the low-tech movement:

  • Traffic to Dumbphone Finder grew 12x from 2022 to 2025, and the site now lists 91 phones (up from 45 at launch)

  • The r/dumbphones subreddit pulls 184,000 weekly visitors

  • Walkman sales are up 111% and instant film cameras up 157%, per Afterpay's Spring/Summer 2026 Trends Report (I see these a lot at events)

  • Eventbrite literally declared this "The Offline Summer" — picnics, block parties, and potlucks are spiking, led by Gen Z

  • Flip-phone startup dumb.co's average user is 24 years old, and both its phones and its 30-day "Month Offline" cohort program have had waitlists

And the part of her experiment I can't stop thinking about: she says the hardest part wasn't curbing her own addiction, it was getting everyone else to accommodate her offline life. Two-factor authentication demanded a smart device. Restaurants made her order by QR code. A Broadway usher needed a digital ticket. The world is architected for smartphones even when the person isn't.

Her honest conclusion wasn't "everybody go analog." Halfway through, she realized she'd been treating it like a restrictive diet and switched to what she called the digital version of intuitive eating, mindful, intentional, sometimes choosing to be online (she followed the Knicks run on socials on purpose, because joy counts). The takeaway was balance, not abstinence.

Now here's my founder/creator/investor lens on all this

The most telling detail in the whole piece: the moments that actually rewired her weren't products at all. They were rooms. Phone-free analog nights in Fort Greene where a host bangs a drum and everyone drops their phone in a metal colander. A phone-free dance party in East Williamsburg. A mindfulness study session in Prospect Park. She wrote that for the first time in her experiment, she didn't feel like she was missing anything.

Sound familiar? Because that's the same signal from every direction right now, the same reason live content is booming, the same reason a villa party beat an $11M activation at Cannes, the same reason IRL is the trust layer of the AI era. The scarcest product for our generation is presence. Not another app that gamifies putting your phone down (she tried those, the virtual-plant-watering apps didn't work). Actual rooms, actual rituals, actual people.

If you're a founder: "offline" is becoming a feature, a format, and a brand position. The waitlists at dumb.co aren't for the hardware, they're for permission to log off.

If you're a creator: the attention-span-rehab niche is real and growing, and the creators leading analog revivals (needlepoint, film cameras, woodworking) are building some of the most loyal communities on the internet. Ironic? Sure. Effective? Extremely.

If you're an investor: watch the "digital wellness meets IRL infrastructure" space. The demand signal isn't a trend report, it's a 12x traffic jump, backordered flip phones, and a generation paying money to be somewhere their phone isn't.
